Long before SOLAS, sailors and coastal communities were solving the same problems the rules now codify: how to stay afloat, how to get off a sinking ship, and how to call for help. The materials were cork, canvas, and black powder — but the ideas are the direct ancestors of the equipment on a modern vessel.
Staying afloat

Buoyancy aids are ancient — inflated animal skins and bundles of reeds appear in Assyrian carvings from nearly three thousand years ago — but the recognisable lifejacket dates to 1854, when Captain John Ross Ward of Britain’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution developed a cork vest for lifeboat crews. Cork blocks sewn onto a canvas waistcoat gave dependable flotation and some protection from impact, and cork jackets became the standard aboard ships for the next half-century — they were what Titanic’s passengers wore into the water.
In the early 1900s cork gave way to kapok, a plant fibre from Java that was lighter and more comfortable. Kapok had a flaw the Second World War exposed: soaked or oil-fouled, it slowly lost buoyancy. Postwar jackets moved to closed-cell foams and then to inflatables — but the requirement they satisfy, one wearable flotation device per person aboard, is Ward’s idea written into law.
Getting off the ship

The purpose-built lifeboat is a Georgian invention. Lionel Lukin patented his “unimmergible” boat — cork-lined, with buoyancy chambers — in 1785, and Henry Greathead’s Original of 1790, built for the mouth of the Tyne, is generally counted the first boat built solely to save life from shipwreck. Self-righting designs followed in the nineteenth century, and the RNLI (founded 1824) and similar societies spread them along the coasts of Europe.
Ship’s boats were another matter: for most of the age of sail they were working boats first and escape craft second, and nobody expected them to hold everyone aboard. That assumption survived, fatally, into 1912.
Rescue from the shore
For a ship wrecked on a beach, the nineteenth century built an entire rescue system that needed no ship at all. The United States Life-Saving Service — a Coast Guard ancestor, organised as a national service in 1878 — manned stations along the coasts with surfboats and beach apparatus. A Lyle gun, a small line-throwing cannon adopted in 1877, could put a light line across a wreck up to several hundred yards out; the crew then rigged a heavier hawser and hauled survivors ashore one at a time in a breeches buoy, a lifebuoy fitted with canvas trousers riding on a pulley. Thousands were saved this way. The line-throwing appliance required on ships today is the Lyle gun’s direct descendant.
Calling for help
Before radio, distress was signalled with whatever could be seen or heard: guns fired at intervals, inverted ensigns, and from the early 1800s, rockets. The Very pistol of 1877 gave every bridge a pocket-sized flare launcher, and coloured pyrotechnics became a signalling vocabulary — one that caused real confusion, since companies also used rockets for private recognition signals. Titanic’s rockets being read as company signals by a nearby ship is why the 1914 convention made night rockets mean distress and nothing else. The flares in a modern raft pack carry that rule on.
Not sinking in the first place

Some of the oldest safety technology is invisible from the deck. Chinese junks were built with watertight bulkheads centuries before European ships adopted them. And the simplest rule of all was painted on the hull: after Samuel Plimsoll’s campaign against overloaded “coffin ships,” Britain’s Merchant Shipping Act of 1876 required a load line showing how deep a ship could legally sit in the water. The circle-and-line Plimsoll mark, later refined by international convention, is still on every cargo ship afloat.
