Safety Data Sheet
Commercial vs. recreational flares
SOLAS-grade signals are far brighter and longer-burning than recreational flares: a SOLAS hand flare burns at 15,000 candela for at least a minute and keeps burning after being dunked, compared with 500 candela for a recreational hand flare. Where your vessel’s rules call for SOLAS-grade signals, recreational flares do not count.
Commercial / SOLAS-grade. USCG, SOLAS and MED approved. These are the signals required on many commercial vessels, including fishing vessels more than 50 miles offshore and ships under 46 CFR Part 199. See our visual distress signal guide for what your vessel needs.
